A Huntress is one of the Wanderers. Long ago it released its core, and the Welter moved into the empty foundation as a heart demon. The soul carries that demon through every unmaking. It can no longer hold ground, so each Turning it comes in out of the Mist and hires itself to whoever pays.
Its kind serves in Bloom, the affinity of growth, beasts and living ground, which Virenna, the Greenmother holds. Sealborn who train Greenmother's Call find it an easy companion. It fights hand to hand, and it grows stronger and harder to kill the longer it serves.
In time it lends the whole army courage before battle. Later it learns to unsettle the enemy's beasts, and last of all to drive its own beasts harder. Huntresses say beasts know the demon's scent: a hostile beast hesitates before it, and a friendly one follows closer. The card shows how much each stage adds.
It costs geld and mana to keep, more as it grows, and it leaves when the pay stops. A kingdom that gets one killed loses its service for the Turning. The soul goes on, and so does its kind.
Ask a huntress what the demon hunts and the answer is always the same: a quarry it cannot catch. The sky has a wound in it, they say, and the demon has been watching it. Whether any huntress can be freed of its demon is not known.
