Binding chain is a lesser work: a length of chain forged by guild artisans in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many copies exist, and each is spent in the battle where it is thrown.
It is cast loose before the fighting starts. It finds one enemy company and wraps it tight. For that battle the bound company loses all its quickness and waits while others act.
Which company it finds is chance. The artisans who forge it admit as much: the chain holds whatever it is thrown at, they say, but no one has ever learned to aim it. Like other works that gamble, it may bind the enemy's greatest company or its smallest.
Unlike most works, it does not answer to a practised hand. A kingdom that trains the maker's arts gets the same chain as one that does not.
