Blast barrel is a lesser work, packed by guild artisans in a Guild during the current Turning by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many copies exist, and each goes up once.
It is rolled out before the fighting and set off among the enemy. Fire reaches every company on the other side. The larger a company is, the more of it the blast catches, so a crowded host suffers worst. How hard it lands on the day is chance. Those who survive the fire are shaken, and strike a little weaker for the rest of the battle.
Cultivators of Pyre, the affinity of fire and war, are dismissive of it. It is fire without a core, they say: loud, honest and fit for nothing else. The coreless lineages disagree. A Human lord cannot cast, but where the barrel is admitted, the lord may light it; the barrel does the burning, not the lord.
A kingdom that trains Sunward Hand is said to pack a fiercer barrel.
