Drowsy taper is a lesser work: a thick candle that guild artisans pour in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many tapers exist, and each burns down in one battle.
It is lit before the fighting, upwind of the enemy. Its smoke drifts over the other side, and for that battle every enemy company fights less well, slow to wake to every order. Its own side, standing behind the flame, is not troubled.
The artisans who pour it tell a story about the smoke. Aefenna, the Lamplighter holds the Third Seal, which holds back night without ending so that power may ebb and return. The artisans say the taper carries a thin thread of that long night: not enough to put an army to sleep, only enough to make it wish it were.
A kingdom that trains Sunward Hand is said to get a heavier smoke from the same wax.
