Fairy powder is a lesser work: a pouch of glittering dust that guild artisans grind in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many pouches exist, and each is scattered in one battle.
Thrown over the enemy before the fighting, it settles on every company there. For that battle they resist many kinds of harm less well at once: arrows and blades, fire and poison, breath and magic. Among the defences a spell must pass, a creature's own resistance is the last, and the dust wears it thin.
It has a limit. There is only so much dust in a pouch, and the more companies it must cover, the thinner it settles on each. Against a small army it bites deep; against a great host it barely sparkles.
The stationers who sell it claim it is gathered where dream-folk have danced. The artisans who grind it do not say. A kingdom that trains Sunward Hand is said to spread it further.
