Fireward scroll

Fireward scroll is a lesser work: a scroll that guild artisans write in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many copies exist, and each crumbles after one battle.

It is read aloud before the fighting. For that battle every company on its holder's side is more resistant to fire. It is the plain answer to a crate of burning oil, or a Pyre mage who has been seen coming.

The artisans who write it call it a scrap of Warding set down on paper. That art is taught by Daegred, the Sunward and Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies together, and its cultivators say a ward is a kind of memory: it must remember what it keeps out. The scroll, the artisans say, remembers fire, but only for one battle. Then it forgets, and falls to dust.

A kingdom that trains Sunward Hand is said to get a stronger reading from the same words.
