Gorgon head is a lesser work: a stone head, carved with its eyes left open, that guild artisans make in a Guild during the current Turning by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many heads exist, and each stares once; afterwards its eyes are only stone.
It is unwrapped before the fighting and held up to the enemy. Its stare falls on a single company, and some of those who meet it die where they stand. Which company it finds is chance, and so is how many fall. Like other works that gamble, it may cut a great company down to size or waste itself on the smallest.
A kingdom that trains Sunward Hand is said to draw more deaths from the same stare.
The artisans carve the heads in plain stone and say nothing more about them. The stationers who sell them are less careful. The first such head, they whisper, was never carved at all. The artisans call that a trader's story told to sell heads; every head they know of was carved by hand.
