Gutter flute is a lesser work: a flute that guild artisans cut in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many flutes exist, and each plays its tune once before it cracks.
It is not a weapon for the battlefield. It is played against another kingdom, down in its drains and gutters where no guard listens. Ordinary folk settle a kingdom's ground, grow its food and pay its geld. When the tune rises, some of them follow it and do not come back, and a share of the kingdom's coin goes with them. The target is left poorer in both people and geld. Which kingdoms may be played against follows the rules of the Turning.
The coreless lineages teach their children a warning song about it.
