Marching drums

Marching drums is a lesser work: a set of war drums that guild artisans stretch and tune in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many sets exist, and each is beaten through one battle until the skins split.

The drums are beaten as the armies close. Their sound carries across the field, and for that battle every enemy company strikes weaker: in its first blow, in every blow after, and in every blow it returns. The drummers' own side is not weakened by them.

Cultivators of Banner, the Plain art that Virenna, the Greenmother teaches, say the drums do to an enemy what their art does for a friend. The coreless lineages love them for another reason. They sing that a drum speaks a lineage's word to every rank at once.

A kingdom that trains Sunward Hand is said to beat a louder rhythm on the same skins.
