Kindle

Kindle is a small spell of Pyre, the affinity of fire, destruction and war that Undon, the Unmaker holds. Before battle, it sets one enemy company alight. Which company it finds is left to chance, and how hard it burns is shown on the card.

It is a battle spell, and each side brings only one. Its fire must still get past the ward, the resistance of its affinity and the creature's own resistance. From a core of another affinity, it costs more, fails more easily and burns weaker, because power forced against its grain curdles.

Guild artisans say it was among the first spells pressed into a core, back in the Age of the First Sealborn, when newcomers first learned to cast. That was also the age when a veteran struck Wen Sarai of the Newcomer's Grace out soon after she arrived. Teachers of Pyre still tell a newcomer to recover this spark first, while the Newcomer's Grace shelters the kingdom. Every returning Sealborn must press it into an empty shard again.
