Raise bone soldiers is the plainest lesson of Umbra. Since the Breaking, the natives' dead have lodged at the threshold of the Deep, pressed against the underside of the world. Where that threshold comes close to the ground, this spell reaches down and calls them up as Bone soldier: the restless dead, marching again.
Every raising answers Odrin Half-Core. In the Age of Odrin he laid his affinity over such ground. The dead rose on borrowed life, and his living folk faded. The lesson has not changed since. The dead borrow life from the living, and a kingdom pays for its bone ranks in people.
Cast by a core of its own affinity, the spell raises the most. Cast against the grain, it raises fewer, and a deeper realm raises more. The card shows the rest. Umbra cultivators say it is the first raising they recover each Turning, because bones answer before anything else does.
