Not every remnant at the threshold of the Deep has kept enough shape to be given bones or flesh. Summon umbra calls those that have not. It raises them as Umbra, dead that move like a stain across the ground.
Umbra cultivators say the shades are the thinnest of the stranded dead: remnants worn so far down that the spell can give them little more than a darkness to stand in. Whether that is true, the histories do not say. What is known is the price. The shades are the restless dead like any others. They walk on life borrowed from the living, as the dead have walked since Odrin Half-Core raised them in the Age of Odrin, and a kingdom that keeps them pays in people.
The spell is simple, and a young core can hold it. Cast from its own affinity it calls the most; against the grain it calls fewer, and a deeper realm calls more.
