Famished serf is drawn from the poorest of the Hallow's ordinary folk: landless, underfed and willing to fight for a meal. Hiring one costs almost no geld, but it still takes a share of the kingdom's people, and the Barracks organise the muster. Like every drilled soldier, a Famished serf is Plain and carries no affinity.
War makes such folk. Conquest burns some captured ground before the victor can hold it, and a kingdom's people grow only as fast as its food allows. The Human lineages sing that the first of them came from the fields that burned when Flint D. Rook struck the thin places of Ysme of Lumen. They ask for bread first and pay second, the songs say, and most of their geld goes to food.
They fight weakly and clumsily, and the card shows how little they add. Upkeep is paid in geld, and unpaid soldiers desert. A Famished serf can be sent home, if there is a home to go to.
