Man-at-Arms is a soldier of a coreless Human lineage: one of the kingdom's own ordinary folk, drilled to fight hand to hand. Recruiting costs geld and draws its soldiers from the kingdom's people, and the lord's Barracks organise the work. Like every drilled soldier, a Man-at-Arms is Plain and carries no affinity.
This soldier serves the lineage's given word as well as its pay. A given word is the will made binding, and the Covenant recognises it. The lineages sing that a soldier who serves a word stands firmer than one who serves pay alone.
The pay still matters. Upkeep is paid in geld, and unpaid soldiers desert. When the lord no longer needs them, a Man-at-Arms can be sent home like any ordinary recruit.
