Pact fiend is one of the greatest of Deopa's creatures: a shape that belongs to the Deep that Deopa, the Deep holds within himself. Its affinity is Umbra. It was never one of the natives' dead.
It is not recruited. It comes through The Deep bargain, the Deep bargain. Every bargain of the Deep consumes people, and this one consumes little else. The Sealborn say its bargain is paid wholly in people: the kingdom spends no mana to hold its shape, only its own folk, turn after turn, for as long as it serves. It cannot be dismissed, and no shortage in the kingdom breaks the bargain. Its wings carry it over the field, and it is still standing when a long battle ends.
Do not mistake it for Deopa's guest. The guest is a hero born in the Deep, kept by Deopa, the Deep between Turnings and called only through The Deep bargain. The creature on this page is a soldier of the Deep, not its guest.
