Swan maiden is one of the two-shaped folk of the Bloom lakes, affinity-born where Bloom runs strong. On the water they wear feathers. On the shore they stand as women, and it is in that shape they fight: hand to hand, quick, precise and beautiful enough to make a foe hesitate.
A kingdom recruits them through its Barracks, at a cost in geld, mana and people, and keeps them on geld and mana. They are slow to muster, desert when unpaid, and can be sent home.
They are not Humans, though they are often taken for them. Humans are coreless people whose power is the will, and a Human lineage fights for its given word. The lake-folk fight for pay. They say they keep one shape for the lake and one for the shore, and that they give the feathered one to no lord.
