Winged horse is a beast of the places where Lumen runs strong: a horse with wings, as quick in the air as on the ground. A mage casts Summon winged horse, and one comes down to the kingdom's fields.
It flies over walls and lines and fights with hoof and teeth. It is no great warrior, but it goes where others cannot. Its upkeep is mostly geld with a little mana. Ordinary folk say the geld is for fodder and stabling, like any horse. Withdraw the upkeep and it is dismissed.
Lumen country folk tell a story about the winged horses. In the Age of the First Sealborn, a veteran struck out Wen Sarai of the Newcomer's Grace shortly after she arrived, and Daegred, the Sunward made the Newcomer's Grace in answer. On the day the Grace was made, the folk say, winged horses flew to every corner of the Hallow to carry the news. It is why, they say, newcomers who wake beneath the Scar so often see wings overhead first.
