A Temple healer is one of the Wanderers, a foreign soul carrying a heart demon where its core once was. It comes out of the Mist each Turning and serves whoever pays. It serves in Lumen, the affinity of order, law, light and protection that Daegred, the Sunward holds.
It strikes with holy light from a distance, and it grows stronger and harder to kill the longer it serves. In time it restores part of its employer's losses after each battle. Later, before battle begins, it burns every company of the restless dead in the enemy's army. Lumen and Umbra lie across the ring from each other and repel. The card shows what each stage does.
This kind of Wanderer bends a rule that holds for the others. Ordinarily, killing one ends its service for the Turning. When a Temple healer falls, it comes back to the same service after a long absence, one step less practised than before. The menders say the death was never real: the demon pulled the mender out into the Mist to mend, and the mender walks back in once whole.
They also say that each mending is a small rehearsal of the healing the sky needs. Closing the Scar would restore the first age's renewal, so the world would survive each appointed opening, though Undon, the Unmaker's term would remain.
It costs geld and mana to keep, more as it grows, and it leaves when the pay stops.
Those of its kind say the demon wants to mend the one wound no mender can reach, and will not let the Wanderer it lives in rest until it has. Whether a mender can be freed is not known.
