A Road steward is one of the Wanderers. Long ago it gave up its core, and a heart demon settled where the core had been. Every road steward carries a heart demon of the same shape and shares its knowledge, and each keeps its own memories. It cannot anchor ground. It comes into each new Hallow through the Mist, the ground the Covenant has not yet fixed, and it does not fight. Its kind holds no affinity and serves as Plain.
Once it has served long enough, it brings its employer a steady sum of geld every turn, and the sum grows the longer it stays. The card shows how much. The road stewards explain the trade simply. The steward walks in from the Mist before any kingdom has laid a road. It knows where the new world's traffic will run, and it gets its employer's goods there first.
The stationers sell lesser works, and sometimes relics, at posted prices. Old relics also surface among the unearthed, the antique trade. Sealborn say both buy from the road stewards before they buy from anyone else.
It costs geld and mana to keep, more as it grows, and it leaves when the pay stops.
Stewards say the demon wants one road in particular: a road out of the Hallow. So the steward walks every road there is, in case one of them leads there. No Sealborn knows a repeatable way out, and the Sealborn believe nothing has ever left through the Scar. Whether a steward can be freed of the demon is not known.
