Infatuation draught

Infatuation draught is a relic, one of the unique treasures Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps among the Mnemoliths when the world is unmade. The sealed vial holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards. Like every made thing it is Plain. Its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.

Tellan names no maker, and where its shard lay before is unknown. Cultivators say its core runs Reverie, the affinity of dream and mind, and that its sweetness draws a Wanderer's heart toward whoever pours it.

The Wanderers are foreign souls who gave up their cores long ago and now carry heart demons. When its holder pours the draught, a seasoned hero of one of many kinds of Wanderer comes to serve: a Road steward, a Wall listener, or another. They arrive already practised in the craft of their kind.

The draught opens the door; it does not hold it. A Wanderer still serves for pay, grows more effective through service and leaves when the pay stops. Whatever the draught stirs in a Wanderer's heart does not reach the demon within. What a heart demon wants, and whether the Wanderer who carries it can ever be freed, no one knows.

After one pouring the draught is spent. A spent relic makes no copy, and its shard waits in Tellan's keeping until the recasting. That is its hunger: a single use, followed by the ordinary cost of a hero who must be paid.

Until then, heaven weighs it. The vial makes its kingdom heavier in Weight, and the Law of Equals brings stronger rivals within reach.
