Construct manual is a lesser work: a book of plates that guild artisans bind in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many copies exist, and each is read once; the plates go dark afterwards.
Reading it stands up a company of Workshop ox in the holder's kingdom. How many rise from the pages is chance. The book releases them; the reader casts nothing.
These oxen are copies. The original is Greenmother's Ox, the ox a Bloom artisan built around an old shard to tend fields. Ysme of Lumen is its first recorded holder, and its thirst starved her wards. Workshop ox has the form without the old core, so it has none of that thirst. It still costs its ordinary upkeep.
The artisans say the manual's first plates were drawn from Greenmother's Ox itself, by someone who wanted its strength without its thirst.
