Onyx ankh is a relic of Umbra, the affinity of death and its aftermath. It holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards, bound on purpose into a made thing. Its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.
On the ring of affinities, Umbra and Lumen lie across from each other and repel. The ankh turns that repulsion into a shield. While it is held, spells of Lumen cast against its holder's kingdom meet a far stronger resistance there. Spells of the other affinities find no new wall.
Heaven counts the ankh in its holder's Weight, so the Law of Equals sets that kingdom among heavier rivals. A conqueror can also carry it off as spoils.
No one knows who made it. Cultivators of Umbra say it was made to keep the wards of order from reaching the dead. That is their belief, not a record.
Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps the ankh among the Mnemoliths between Turnings. There is one in each Turning, and if it is lost, its shard returns to his keeping for the recasting.
