Scorching stone is a relic of Pyre, the affinity of fire, destruction and war. It holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards, bound into a stone that never cools, and its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.
It is thrown once, at another kingdom, and it burns that kingdom's Nodes. A node is raised over a Wellspring, a thin place in the Covenant, and gathers and stores the kingdom's mana. The stone takes a share of them, and the more nodes a kingdom has raised, the more the stone burns.
Its hunger is its own ending. The stone is spent in the throwing. Until then, heaven counts it in its holder's Weight, and a holder who waits for the perfect target carries that Weight the whole time. When it is spent, its shard returns to Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies, and no second stone is made that Turning.
No one knows who made it. Cultivators of Pyre say it teaches the lesson of Flint's betrayal: strike where the power is gathered. In the Age of the Given Word, Flint's lord broke his word and struck Ysme's thin places, where her own relic had starved her wards. That history is recorded; the stone's part in the lesson is their belief.
Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps it among the Mnemoliths between Turnings. There is one in each Turning.
