A Node is raised over a Wellspring, one of the thin places in the Covenant. There it gathers mana, the raw power that is one of a kingdom's two currencies, and stores it. No one makes a home over a Wellspring.
A Sealborn's core draws mana of its own, but a Node gathers it from the ground itself, and it is not only for mages. A coreless Human lord can raise one too, because gathering mana is not casting.
The thin places are not endless. The limits on how many can be raised and on stored mana are conventions of play.
