Smoldering resin is a relic of Pyre, the affinity of fire, destruction and war. It holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards, bound into a lump of resin that smoulders and never burns out, and its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.
While it burns in its holder's kingdom, the holder's spells cost less mana, dispelling costs less, and casting fails less often. It eases every spell, whatever its affinity. A coreless lord cannot cast at all, so for a Human lord the resin is only a sweet smell.
Heaven counts the resin in its holder's Weight, so the Law of Equals sets that kingdom among heavier rivals, and a conqueror can carry it off as spoils.
No one knows who made it. Sealborn like to set it beside Quartz elder staff, which makes every spell dearer. They say the two were bound by rivals, one to ease every casting and one to tax it. That is a belief; nothing in the record names either maker.
Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps the resin among the Mnemoliths between Turnings. There is one in each Turning, and if it is lost, its shard returns to his keeping for the recasting.
