Deadly stare does not wound. It kills. Before the fighting starts, it falls on a single enemy company, and some of its soldiers simply die where they stand. A deeper shard takes more.
Umbra cultivators describe it from the inside. For an instant, they say, the caster's eyes open onto the threshold of the Deep, where the natives' dead have waited since the Breaking, and whoever meets that look is pulled across. Those who have cast it often do not like to talk about what they saw.
It is a complex spell, and a core must be well cultivated to hold it. It must still pass the enemy's ward, the resistance of its affinity and the creature's own resistance in turn, and a well-warded company can turn it aside. Cast from its own affinity it takes the most; against the grain it takes fewer. It is a commander's one battle spell, spent on a single look.
