The Deepward Step

The Deepward Step is one of the five oldest spells. It is older than the Scar. Like every spell, it keeps its form because the Fourth Seal holds back shapelessness, and that Seal has been set since the first casting.

Its age grants no privilege. The Deepward Step still answers to affinity like any spell. A core of its own affinity calls the most; against the grain it calls fewer, and a deeper realm calls more. Whether it can be cast at all depends on the Turning's pinned ruleset. Where it is disabled, it belongs to the histories, not to the cast menu.

Where it is enabled, it calls up celestials descended into the Deep: celestial beings who went down into Deopa's Deep at the Breaking and now count among his creatures. Each casting brings Corrupt seraph, Corrupt high seraph or Corrupt throne seraph, and the caster does not decide which.

Umbra cultivators say the spell's name remembers the step those celestials took down, and that what it calls comes up still falling.
