The raisings of Umbra reach the threshold of the Deep, where the natives' dead wait. Summon horned fiend reaches past it. It calls Horned fiend, one of the creatures of Deopa, the Deep: shapes that belong to the Deep itself, which lies beneath the Hallow and outside it.
Deopa's creatures are not all the same kind of thing. Some arose from the stranded dead. Some went down into the Deep at the Breaking and never came back up as they were. Umbra cultivators say the horned ones are of the first sort: dead who pressed so close to the Deep for so long that the Deep changed them. The histories do not settle it.
What is settled is the bargain. Every bargain with the Deep consumes people, and the creature's card shows how. The spell takes turns and a well-cultivated shard. Cast from its own affinity it calls the most; against the grain it calls fewer, and a deeper realm calls more.
