Corpse eater is one of the restless dead: the natives' dead, stranded at the threshold of the Deep since the Breaking. Umbra reaches them where that threshold presses close to the ground. A mage raises this kind with Raise corpse eaters.
Its bond is deep. The restless dead borrow life from the living, and this one keeps borrowing. Each turn it costs mana and a little of the kingdom's folk. It is bound too deeply to be dismissed. A master who tires of it can only lose it in battle. Here Odrin Half-Core's lesson from the Age of Odrin shows most plainly: while his dead rose, his living folk faded.
The Sealborn say hunger is what binds it so deeply. It wants the life it borrows. Its bite takes more life and numbs whatever it bites.
It keeps no corpse across Turnings. When it is unmade, its remnant falls back to the threshold, and the Sealborn say holy light sends it there fastest.
