Burial casket is a lesser work: a sealed casket that guild artisans close in a Guild during the current Turning, by the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard and no hungry spirit. Many caskets exist, and each opens once.
What lies inside is one of the restless dead, the natives' dead stranded at the threshold of Deopa, the Deep's Deep since the Breaking. Opening the lid releases a whole company of one kind: Risen corpse, Corpse eater, Specter, Bone sorcerer or Blood drinker. Which kind is chance. The work releases them; its opener casts nothing.
The casket is free of hunger, but what climbs out of it is not. The restless dead borrow life from the living, and that costs a kingdom its people. Some are bound too deeply to be sent back. Each company keeps the rules on its own card.
The artisans say they seal a casket only where the threshold presses close to the ground. Odrin Half-Core found such places first, in the Age of Odrin, and his folk faded there.
