Spearman is one of the kingdom's ordinary folk, drilled to hold a long spear in close ranks. Recruiting spearmen costs geld and draws on the kingdom's people, and the Barracks organise the work. Like every drilled soldier, a Spearman is Plain and carries no affinity.
The folk say the spear began in the fields. The ground grows because Virenna, the Greenmother's First Seal holds back barrenness, and those who work it carried long tools long before they carried arms. When a Rider first came through the crops, the farmers lengthened their tools until a horse could not reach them. That, they say, is the whole art of the spear: keep the charge at the length of your arm and the shaft.
What the spear does in battle is shown on the card. Upkeep is paid in geld, and unpaid soldiers desert. A Spearman can be sent home like any ordinary recruit.
