Strangling ivy is treefolk, the smallest of the affinity-born kinds that grow where Bloom runs strong. It does not answer a recruiter's drum. A Sealborn calls it with Summon strangling ivy, and it comes up through the ground around the enemy's feet.
The ivy lashes at whatever stands within its reach and drinks the life of what it strikes, and in battle it grows back from what the blades cut away. Its keep is paid in geld and mana, and its lord may release it from service whenever they wish.
Bloom cultivators like to set it beside the tale of Odrin Half-Core, whose raised dead drew life from his own people until his living folk faded. The ivy costs its kingdom no one. It takes from the enemy, they say, what the dead take from their own lord.
Fire is its grief. Ash feeds growth, the cultivators admit, but the fire comes first, and the ivy has never learned to wait for the ash.
