Wall listener

A Wall listener is one of the Wanderers: a foreign soul that let go of its core in an earlier Unsealing and took a heart demon into the empty place. Every wall listener carries a heart demon of the same shape and shares its knowledge, and each keeps its own memories. It cannot anchor ground. It comes in from the Mist each Turning, and it does not fight. Its kind holds no affinity and serves as Plain.

A kingdom's Workshops set the pace of construction. Once a Wall listener has served long enough, everything its employer builds goes up faster, and faster still the longer it stays. Wall listeners say the demon hears where a wall wants to stand, and a builder who listens wastes no stone. The card shows how much faster.

The coreless lineages value it most. A Human lord builds works and walls, and their lineage's songs say a Human lord who knows how their own walls stand knows how others' fall.

It costs geld and a little mana to keep, more as it grows, and it leaves when the pay stops.

Every wall it raises is unmade at the Unsealing, with the rest of the ground and everything on it. The listeners say the demon wants one thing: a wall the Unsealing cannot take down. Whether a listener can ever be freed of the demon is not known.
