Novice primer is a lesser work, made by guild artisans in a Guild with the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Seal-shard, so there are many copies. It is Plain, and it is spent when it is used.
Open it in your own kingdom and it releases what is bound inside: a company of Toad or a company of Chipmunk, whichever chance decides. The operator casts nothing; the work does the releasing. Once they arrive, their own cards say what they cost to keep.
The artisans date the primer to the Age of the First Sealborn. A veteran struck Wen Sarai of the Newcomer's Grace out soon after she arrived, and Daegred, the Sunward made the Newcomer's Grace. The guilds say they bound the first primers in the same season, so that a new kingdom would have something on its walls, however small.
Veterans call it a book for beginners. Every Turning, some of them buy it anyway. They keep their memories, but each wakes with an untrained core and empty hands.
