Firebird amulet

Firebird amulet is a relic, one of the unique treasures Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps among the Mnemoliths across the Unsealings. The amulet holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards, and its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.

Tellan records no maker. The stationers, who sometimes sell it, say it was bound in the Age of the First Sealborn, when great kingdoms devoured small ones, so that a fallen lord could rise again. They say its shard runs Pyre. Cultivators point to the ring of affinities: the dead burn, and ash nourishes growth. Fire, they say, is where new things begin.

A kingdom with no fortress is lost for the Turning. The amulet refuses that ending. Each time its holder's kingdom is destroyed, the amulet flares. Fresh fortress ground rises from the ash. The kingdom's land, geld and mana come back up to a modest footing, enough to begin again. For a while after, the new kingdom is sheltered from attack while it finds its feet.

Its hunger is strange. Its price shows only in what follows. Heaven weighs relics, and the amulet makes its kingdom heavier in Weight. Under the Law of Equals, stronger rivals come within reach, and some may be the very armies the amulet will one day need to survive.
