Scarlet standard is a relic of Pyre, the affinity of fire, destruction and war. It holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards, bound into a war standard, and its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.
Its gift is simple. While it is held, every company in the holder's army strikes harder, whatever it is and wherever it fights. Cultivators of Banner, the art of the host that holds together under one standard, know what a banner can do for an army. This one does more, and asks for no training at all.
Heaven counts the standard in its holder's Weight, so the Law of Equals sets that kingdom among heavier rivals, and a conqueror can carry it off as spoils. A standard is a thing armies fight over.
No one knows who made it. Sealborn say it flew over the great kingdoms that devoured small ones in the Age of the First Sealborn, before Daegred, the Sunward made the Law of Equals in answer. That is their belief. The record gives the devouring and the Law, and no banner.
Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps the standard among the Mnemoliths between Turnings. There is one in each Turning, and if it is lost, its shard returns to his keeping for the recasting.
