Sinful idol

Sinful idol is a relic of Umbra, the affinity of death and its aftermath. It holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards, bound into a small carved figure, and its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.

While it is held, its holder's kingdom resists spells of every affinity more strongly. Order, dream, death, fire and growth all meet the same stubborn wall.

Its hunger is written into the holder's own spellwork. While the idol is kept, dispelling costs the holder more mana. When an enemy's curse must be lifted, or an old enchantment cleared away, the idol makes the work dearer. Heaven also counts it in its holder's Weight.

No one knows who made it. Sealborn say the idol keeps whatever is laid on its holder's kingdom, good or ill, and does not like to let it go. That is why, they say, it guards so well and unbinds so badly. It is a belief.

Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps the idol among the Mnemoliths between Turnings. There is one in each Turning, and if it is lost, its shard returns to his keeping for the recasting.
