Boon of chance is one of the great spells of Reverie, the affinity of dream, illusion and mind. The caster speaks a wish into a dream and takes whatever the dream gives back. Cultivators of the affinity warn every young mage the same way: a dream gives what it likes, not what you ask for.
Sometimes it gives nothing at all. Sometimes it gives geld, a handful of lesser works, extra turns, new folk or progress in the arts the kingdom is training. Rarely it gives something no other spell can: the relic Genie flask. There is only one of each relic in a Turning, and a relic no one has found waits in Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies's keeping, so this is one more road by which that treasure can surface. And rarely the dream takes instead of giving, and the caster loses mana or turns.
Whatever comes, the casting itself spends a great deal of mana and turns. Cast against the grain, a spell costs more and fails more easily. It needs a casting core, and shards scattered only at the Breaking, so no one cast it before the first Sealborn learned to cast.
