Elder codex is a relic, one of the unique treasures Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies carries through every Unsealing on the Mnemoliths. Its old pages hold an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards. Like every made thing it is Plain. Its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.
No maker is recorded, and where its shard lay before is unknown. The Human lineages have their own belief, carried in their songs. They say the book sets down how the Skybreaker trained the will. Over the surviving Turnings of the first age, before the world began to be unmade, the Skybreaker cultivated the will until he could climb to Heaven's Gate. The songs say his practice is written here, line by line. Sealborn scholars are less sure.
Whoever wrote it, reading it is like years of practice poured in at once. The kingdom gains a great store of training progress toward its arts, the trained shapes held in a shard or a will. It works for a coreless lord as well as a mage, because training is not casting. Training gained this way, like any training, cannot be withdrawn.
Its hunger is its own ending. After one reading the book is spent, and a spent relic makes no copy. Its shard waits in Tellan's keeping until the recasting.
Unread, it makes its kingdom heavier in Weight, and the Law of Equals brings stronger rivals within reach.
