Most battle spells of Umbra are aimed at the enemy. Blood rage is aimed at the caster's own army, and it does not come free.
For the length of a battle, every company the caster fields strikes harder. Every company also becomes easier to kill. Umbra cultivators put it plainly: the spell spends tomorrow's strength today. It pulls on the living body the way the threshold of the Deep pulls on the dead, and what it pulls out goes into the blow. What is spent does not come back before the fighting ends.
It is the same lesson Odrin Half-Core taught with the dead, turned on the living. Nothing in Umbra is borrowed without being paid for.
The trade grows with the caster. Cast from its own affinity, both the gain and the cost are greatest; against the grain both shrink, and a deeper realm sharpens both.
