Malediction is among the least costly spells of Umbra, and among the oldest habits of the Sealborn. Since the Age of the First Sealborn, when newcomers first learned to cast, Umbra mages have opened their battles with it.
It is a spoken ill-wish. Before the fighting, it marks a single enemy company, and for the rest of the battle that company strikes less truly. Ordinary folk who have served against Umbra kingdoms tell how it feels. The marked soldier sees the threshold of the Deep at the edge of every glance, they say, and looks away at the moment of the blow.
The spell must still pass the enemy's ward, the resistance of its affinity and the creature's own resistance. Cast from its own affinity it spoils aim the most; against the grain it does less. No Human lord can cast it. A Human lord casts no battle spell, and any magic in a lineage's battles must come by an allowed route.
