Every raising of Umbra runs on borrowed life. The dead stand because the living pay, and since Odrin Half-Core first raised them in the Age of Odrin, Umbra kingdoms have paid in their own people. Life drain is the spell that turns that borrowing outward.
For the length of a battle, every company the caster fields takes life from the enemies it strikes. Umbra cultivators call it the only borrowing in their affinity where someone else pays: the enemy, not the kingdom. They like it for that reason, and they cast it gladly over armies of the restless dead.
It has been cast since the Age of the First Sealborn, and it is a commander's one battle spell. Cast from its own affinity it takes the most; from any other affinity it takes less. The card gives the rest.
