False treasure

False treasure is one of the great spells of Reverie, the affinity of dream, illusion and mind. It is cast on a rival kingdom, and it draws geld, the everyday coin, out of that kingdom's stores. How much is never certain. Sometimes it takes a little, sometimes a great deal, and the caster cannot know in advance.

Nor does all of it arrive. Only part of what the spell draws away reaches the caster; the rest is simply gone. Cultivators of Reverie explain the loss with a story. The rival's folk are shown a treasure greater than their coin, and they trade the coin away for it gladly. When the dream fades, the treasure is gone, and so is some of the coin, spent on nothing at all.

It is a gamble with a heavy stake. Casting it spends a great deal of mana and turns, whatever it brings back. Cast against the grain, a spell costs more and fails more easily. It needs a casting core, and shards scattered only at the Breaking, so no one cast it before the first Sealborn learned to cast.
