Heartsick charm is a battle spell of Reverie, the affinity of dream, illusion and mind. Before the fighting starts, one of the caster's companies, selected at random, takes on the beauty ability for the battle. Cast by a mage of the affinity itself, the spell gives the same company the charm ability as well. What each ability does is written on the card.
Cultivators of Reverie say the spell sends the enemy a brief dream of loving the soldiers in front of them, and it is hard to strike what you have dreamed of loving. Human lineages know a harder kind of binding. A given word is the will made binding, and breaking it loosens the will's hold. A charmed heart, the mages say, is a promise no one made, and when the battle ends it breaks without leaving any mark.
Each side brings one battle spell. Cast against the grain by a mage of another affinity, this one costs more and fails more easily, and the charm never comes. It needs a casting core, and shards scattered only at the Breaking, so no one cast it before the first Sealborn learned to cast.
