Radiant ward

Radiant ward is a battle spell of Lumen, the affinity of order, law, light and protection that Daegred, the Sunward holds. Before the lines meet, the caster lays a mantle of light over a single company, selected as the battle falls. For that battle the company becomes a bane of the restless dead: the natives' dead, stranded at Deopa's threshold since the Breaking and raised by Umbra on borrowed life. Its cultivators say ordered light loosens that borrowed life.

Lumen cultivators say the spell was first pressed in the Age of Odrin. When the dead of Odrin Half-Core rose and his living folk faded, the kingdoms beside him needed soldiers his dead could not simply outlast. The songs of that age cannot be checked, and the cultivators tell them anyway.

A kingdom brings one battle spell to each fight. A deeper realm makes the mantle stronger; the card shows how much. A core of another affinity casts it at greater cost, with more failure and less strength. Every Turning a Sealborn must recover it by research, and a Human lord can never cast it.
