Relic seeking is a seeking spell of Lumen, the affinity of order, law, light and protection that Daegred, the Sunward holds. The caster sends light out through their own kingdom for a few turns and spends a great deal of mana, and the light comes back with something: a lesser work, found by chance.
It never comes back with a relic. Lesser works are made by guild artisans during the Turning, with Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies's method; they hold no core and exist in many copies. Relics are one of a kind. Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies keeps them among the Mnemoliths, and they surface only through guild work, the stationers or the unearthed. Lumen cultivators say the light finds what lies nearest and unclaimed, and the relics are never near.
They also say Ysme of Lumen, first recorded holder of the Greenmother's Ox, cast this spell hoping for a second treasure to match it. It brought her lesser works.
A core of another affinity casts it at greater cost, with more failure and less strength. Every Turning a Sealborn must recover it by research, and a Human lord can never cast it.
