Relic theft

Relic theft is a spell of Reverie, the affinity of dream, illusion and mind. It is cast on a rival kingdom, and it takes a lesser work from that kingdom's stores and carries it home to the caster. Casting it spends mana and turns.

For all its reach, it never takes a relic. A lesser work is made by guild artisans during the Turning, using the method of Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies. It holds no Core, and there can be many copies of it. A relic is different: it holds an old piece of Covenant-stuff, and a treasure spirit bound inside it answers to Wefan, the Weaver. Cultivators of Reverie say the difference is simple. A lesser work has no one inside to notice it has gone, so it can be dreamed out of one kingdom and into another. A treasure spirit knows its holder, and it will not be dreamed away.

Cast against the grain by a mage of another affinity, the spell costs more and fails more easily. It needs a casting core, and shards scattered only at the Breaking, so no one cast it before the first Sealborn learned to cast.
