Torpor is a battle spell of Reverie, the affinity of dream, illusion and mind. Cast by a mage of that affinity, it drags at the whole enemy army before the fighting starts, and every enemy company acts later than otherwise.
Cast by anyone else, it does nothing at all. Power forced against its grain always curdles, and most spells only land weaker, but this one does not land. Cultivators of Reverie give a reason. Aefenna, the Lamplighter holds the Third Seal, which lets power ebb and return; each return brings every kingdom a new turn. They say this spell slows that same rhythm inside the enemy's soldiers for the length of a battle, and only a shard that answers to the holder of the rhythm can reach it.
Each side brings one battle spell. For a mage of Reverie, this is a quiet choice that touches every enemy company at once; for anyone else it is an empty one. It needs a casting core, and shards scattered only at the Breaking, so no one cast it before the first Sealborn learned to cast.
