Specter is one of the restless dead: the natives' dead, stranded at the threshold of the Deep since the Breaking. Umbra reaches them where that threshold presses close to the ground. A mage calls this one up as a flying shade with Summon specter. The first to raise the stranded dead was Odrin Half-Core, in the Age of Odrin.
Its bond is deep. It borrows life from the living, so each turn it costs the kingdom folk as well as mana. It cannot be dismissed. It must be lost in battle.
The Human lineages sing that it is the shade of someone who died with something unfinished. They say that want is what holds it too deep to release. The Sealborn keep no such song. They only note that its touch numbs, drinks life from what it strikes, and that holy light cuts it deepest.
It keeps no form across Turnings. When it is unmade, its remnant falls back to the threshold, and the want, if the lineages are right, falls with it.
