Hourglass egg

Hourglass egg is a relic, a unique treasure that Tellan, the Keeper of Tallies preserves among the Mnemoliths at each Unsealing. Inside its shell of glass and sand is an old piece of Covenant-stuff, the substance of the Seal-shards. Like every made thing it is Plain. Its treasure spirit answers to Wefan, the Weaver.

No maker is recorded, and where its shard lay before is unknown. Cultivators have a belief about what it holds. Aefenna, the Lamplighter's power ebbs and returns, and each time it returns, every kingdom gains a turn. They say the egg holds returns of that power that someone once laid by and never spent. They say its shard runs Reverie, the affinity of dream, and that the sand inside never quite settles.

When its holder breaks it, those turns pour out at once. The kingdom gains a great store of time: seasons of work, war and research that no other kingdom was given. How much the egg holds, no one knows until it breaks.

That is its hunger. It is a gamble on how much, and it is a single breaking. After one use the egg is spent, and a spent relic makes no copy. Its shard waits in Tellan's keeping until the recasting.

Until then it sits whole in the treasury, and heaven weighs it. The egg makes its kingdom heavier in Weight, and the Law of Equals brings stronger rivals within reach.
